Creating Timelessness in Your Home with Quilts

Have you ever had one of those days? You know, the one where you are going non-stop from the moment you wake up to the moment you go back home? The one where, at the end of the day, all of your energy is zapped? And then, instead of getting the rest and relaxation you so desperately need, the living spaces in your home actually add to the stress?

I am Lauren Metang, a quilter and quilt pattern designer, and, together with my husband Patrick, we have created Palm Creations. We spend our days as scientists, researching and studying advanced prostate cancer (that’s Lauren) and traumatic brain injury (that’s Patrick). As scientists, our minds are always on, always thinking, always perfecting, and always doing.

When we come home from a long day in the lab, and there are so many long days, it is vital for us to be able to rest in our home. After incorporating many different décor styles, we have found one that creates a peaceful atmosphere in our home. The romance and minimalism of the French countryside has brought so much rest to us as the style is rooted in nature.

However, even though we are drawn to a specific style, we have found that when there’s not a cohesive feel to the decorations in our house, it actually adds to the stress that we already have. Can you relate?

One way we love to infuse our peaceful style is to incorporate quilts to create a timeless space, which leaves us refreshed and revitalized after a busy day. If you also struggle with finding cohesion within your home décor too, don’t worry. We’ve got some tips for you to help create that timelessness in your home with quilts.

If you also struggle with finding cohesion within your home décor too, don’t worry. We’ve got some tips for you to help create that timelessness in your home with quilts.

Create a relaxing focal point

We believe that above all else, your home should be a place where you are able to unwind from your busy day and rest. Instead of your eyes (and mind) bouncing from one place to another, create a space where your eye can rest. This is called a focal point. Some people have televisions as their focal point, but that may not be relaxing to everyone. A quilt can serve as a relaxing focal point as the main purpose for a quilt has traditionally been to provide warmth and comfort. Choose your most favorite quilt and place it where your eyes naturally rest.

Unite decorations around a common element

Now that you’ve determined where your quilt should go, make sure that the other decorations in your home and in your space match the quilt. You can match by style, design, or color. However, we recommend using all three when deciding on additional decorations. If your quilt is an heirloom quilt, add some vintage or antique pieces to your decorations. If your quilt is more modern with sleek lines and minimal design, find decorations with similar sleek lines. When deciding on colors, you can take a photo of the quilt and upload it to a site that allows you to pull out the colors and then color match. We like the Sherwin Williams app.

Display quilts, made in your style design and colors, in all areas of your home

In addition to having a quilt as a focal point, pepper your house with other quilts which fit your décor style. Whether those quilts are bed quilts or wall hangings, share your art with everyone who enters your home. Not only will they enhance your décor, but they can also be fantastic conversation starters. Personally, I love learning about the history behind the quilts, especially because quilts, for me, coincide with different seasons of my life. Those memories surface when I see and speak about the quilt.
